Glowy.

brown rice pasta with fresh basil pesto and kale
So much better than it sounds.. really..

Two weeks and counting people. Today officially marks day 15, I've only got 6 days to go. But let's set things straight: I haven't been a complete angel this whole time. There was that batch of cookies I brought over to a friend recently and at least one of them had to be tested by me for quality assurance. Oh those chocolate chips! Sweet, sweet paradise.

But this darn detox has been much easier than I expected it to be. I never thought I would say it but I think I actually prefer brown rice pasta to the regular stuff. It seems to have a better al dente quality, if you're into that sort of thing. And since I do have a tendency to get hooked on a particular ingredient for stretches at a time, my sudden addiction to kale can't be too much of a surprise.
I'm telling you, that kale. Is it possible to eat too much?
I can't seem to get enough of it. I just want to snuggle up to it at night and read it bedtime stories. In the summer I want to plant a garden and fill it with just kale.
That is how much I love it.

My efforts seem to have been rewarded with some welcome comments on the state of my skin this past week ranging from "luminous" to "hydrated".
I mean really. Luminous? If Gwyneth and I stood side by side, I just might out-glow her.

So what happens after day 21? I'm not sure. It doesn't seem quite right to celebrate a healthy liver and a clean system by mucking it all up again. So I think I'll just have to ease back into it slowly.
A hot cup of coffee might just be first on the list.

I OD'd a little on kale a few days ago, but I think I've recovered. It is indeed possible to have too much at one sitting. But it's so yummy! Try it roasted:

My version is here.

Makes a great snack!

IT sounds delicious to me! I recently got some wonderful whole wheat spagetti from Italy that would be perfect in this dish too.

I've been waiting to hear how the detox was going and I'm glad it hasn't been too horrible. I'm really thinking about giving it a go. Any tips?

That looks tremendous to me.

Congrats on the detox going well. Funny what our bodies know that we don't.

And is that Tinkyada pasta? that stuff is genuinely good.

Keep going, miss. It's worth it!

So great to know your detox is going well!! Congratulations on luminous skin! ;)

Being inspired by your example I've cut off my yogurt intake that I'd been eating galore lately. To be honest I myself so easily get hooked on certain ingredients that are healthy in general, and yet at some point when it's already too much of a good thing my body starts signalling me to re-organize my daily menu. Exactly like with my yogurt intake. I got skin irritaion and the like. Read lots of articles on ayurveda and learnt that it's probably because of sour element excess in my body. What now? My skin is getting smoother and softer, and gradually I'm getting rid of skin irritation. Amazing to discover every time how wise our bodies are!!

How is your yoga practice going? ;)

Well....I hate sounding like some parental figure, but damn I am proud of your detoxing accomplishments!

As for coffee....
When I was pregnant, was sorta kinda like detoxing, no caffeine, no alcohol, etc., and each time I thought, "hey, I can probably stay off coffee for ever". All it takes is one cup. That's all I'm saying. :)

Kitt, roasted kale sounds right up my alley--I'm a big fan of anything that's roasted. I will check out your recipe, thanks!

Kalyn, I'm glad you think it looks good too. And I agree-- your ww spaghetti would be a great alternative!

Brooke, well I have to admit that it's easy for me to follow because I have a health food store right near me that gives me all these wonderful alternatives to the foods Im supposed to avoid. Like quinoa bread and brown rice pasta--it definitely makes it easier if you can find these kinds of foods to substitute.. But if you need any guidance just email me and I'll help you as much as I can!

Kat, oh man, I hope it comes soon too. 9 weeks and counting.. it's so painful!

Shauna, yes it is Tinkyada--I love it and will definitely buy it again even after the detox is over. Although I wish they had some more shape options!

Anya, you are so right --our bodies definitely give us signs which we often ignore. Very interesting about your yogurt experience. And thanks for asking--the yoga is going well!

Alisa, thanks darlin! And I hear you on the coffee thing, although I haven't gotten to the point of thinking I could stay off of it forever.. I really want one.. now.. ;)

Glad to hear more about the detox success, our luminous friend! I must get my butt in gear and get myself some kale; hearing you rave about it has made it awfully tempting!

These 6 days will fly by fast! Congrats on your detox. One stupid question though. Some people say that detoxing makes you.. um... stink. I can't imagine it's true but i've never detoxed before. Your thoughts?

Tara, thanks! And yes, get thee some kale asap before the season is over!

Michelle, hmm, well I think you might be thinking of a high protein diet, which isn't really a detox, but your body can get in this acid state which leaves you a bit stinky. Would never do that myself because I remember a co-worker doing that kind of diet and boy, was that an unpleasant odour. So no, I am eating super healthy, and am feeling great!

Alexandra, I'm happy to hear it. I am a big fan of healthy food too, it makes you feel good before you even eat it!

Make sure you put a big shot of brandy into that hot cup of coffee. Give one to Gwyneth while you are at it--she looks like she could use one. I'd say that glow is from hunger.

Blogger Michèle said...

Anon, um, I don't actually know Gwyneth, you do realize that right?
And if you're referring to my glow being the result of hunger then you haven't been reading my posts on what this detox is about. A big bowl of brown rice pasta with basil pesto and fresh kale does not leave me the least bit hungry. So there's that.

So, along with the toxins, you have detoxed your sense of humour out of your system. I meant Gwyneth's glow, not yours.

Anon, well darn it, they do say that is one of the risks of detox but oh the glow is worth it.

! You've stumbled upon the beauty secret of raw foodies, haha : ) Daily kale - as lightly cooked as possible, if at all - is a virtual guarantee of radiant skin and 'the glow'.
