On a mission.

Emerald Sesame Kale

It's time that I confess that this girl is on a serious mission. In about 7 weeks time I will be donning a wedding dress and saying 'I do' to that beau-hunk of mine, otherwise known as G. This means that these days I am paying an unusual amount of attention to the size of every pore on my face, the strength and shine of every strand of hair on my head and yes, of course, any extra jiggle in my walk.
Seven weeks and counting.

So now maybe you understand why it is that when I walked into
Whole Foods the other day I avoided all those decadent things at the prepared foods counter and opted for a big old serving of their Emerald Sesame Kale.
This stuff was seriously green.
So green, in fact, it made me feel like my skin was going to instantly glow the minute I took that first bite. I even got them to throw in some roasted asparagus and baby bok choy with miso just to show them how serious I was about this whole thing.

I'm aiming for glowing skin here people, and I am going to show no mercy.

It was the most ridiculous looking pile of stuff and even the most forgiving eye would admit that it didn't look all that appetizing in it's plastic container. But like I said, I'm on a mission.
Admittedly, the asparagus and the bok choy were consumed with little fanfare.
But that kale.
Oh my, that green, green kale.
I had no idea kale could be that good. Maybe that's not saying much coming from a girl who doesn't buy it all that often, but I think I may now be officially converted.

Unfortunately, it seems that Whole Foods saves their best recipes for their cookbook. They seem to have a recipe by this name in there but the full recipe is not posted on their website.

However, I did manage to find two recipes with the exact same name and same ingredient list so I think I may be on to something. But if anyone out there has the real deal, you will give me a nudge, won't you?

*************
If you're interested, the 2 recipes I found both contain: kale, sesame oil, sesame seeds, garlic and soy sauce. I haven't tested these recipes yet but the ingredient list does give us a good head start, don't you think?

OMG congratulations! Drink more green tea and white tea, I've heard it helps with complexion. Best wishes!

Congratulations!

I can relate to the extra care in one's skin before the big event--I broke out with a million little zits across my forehead a few weeks before my wedding with the makeup lady (and photographer and me as photoshop monkey) had to deal with. The acne was definitely stress-related, but then again, so was my weight loss of at least 5lbs. Ya win some, ya lose some, but you'll get a wonderful party and a husband out of it!

As a guy, I had a good laugh. You're such a girl. Then my laughing ceased as I realized that I have a baby girl, and that she too will go through this at some point. :|

I too am very fond of any leafy dark green veg that cooks into nothing.

Oh my, that does look seriously green. But any delicious preparation of kale is of interest to me. I hated the stuff for years, but now realize that if you are careful it can be delicious. I might have to try this one.

Seven weeks? Seven weeks! How amazing:-)

Kat, good to know! I will add a daily dose of tea to my pre-wedding ritual. Whatever works, right?!

Matilda, oh that would be my worst nightmare. Thank god for photoshop huh. But losing 5lbs is a bit of a consolation isn't it. I'm hoping I can stay in the clear for the next 7 weeks--keep your fingers crossed for me.

Kevin, ha! You are too funny. I can't deny it, everyone has a little bridezilla in them. I bet it won't be long before your daughter starts picking out her china pattern.

Tea, well it seems this dish is one that is common at whole foods stores so you may even find it at your local one (is there one near you?) I highly suggest you give it a try, it is astoundingly good!

O's mom, aw shucks dude. You are too sweet!

Luvving the fact that you're focusing on glowing skin and not dropping 20 pounds on a fad diet like most brides!

As the deliciously chilly fall season is upon us, if you are a soup fan, may I recommend a chorizo and kale soup? There are recipes all over the net, and I think it's often identified as a Portuguese dish. There are many variations, but I'd recommend sticking with vegetable stock (over chicken). I've also made the soup with white beans in lieu of the sausage and it's just as delicious!

SO HAPPY for you and G!!!

i love how you share little bits about his reactions to your brimming creativity.

there is a really cool tea thermos (i will find site for you) it has at the top a separate partition for tea (loose or bag)so you can brew as you go and pour into attached cup.

my wonderful gardener neighbor has lots of kale and says its sweeter after the first frost. im going to enjoy your recipes and have some now and then. i am looking forward to glowing also for no special reason at all!! ( :

p.s. hope you get my email (fun wedding pics)

Julia, well I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hopping to drop a few too, but good skin and hair is definitely the priority! And thanks for the recommendation, that does sound like some fine, fine soup. I will see what I can find on the internet. And it just so happens I have some white judion beans that would be perfect for that too.

Rene, thank you! And I will definitely look for that thermos, I think even G would like that for his usual english breakfast.
Good tip on the kale too, I didn't know that! And thank you so much, I did get your email--there is one coming back your way promptly!

I bought some kale yesterday after reading your post. The green in the post was tempting and so was the lure of a glowing complexion. Congrats on your wedding.

First of all, CONGRATS to you & G! 7 weeks.. WOW. You seem so calm compared to other women I know during this time of their engagement.

I have to admit that I've never tried kale before. Looks like I'm going to have to give it a go. It actually reminds me of seaweed salad. Every try it?

Gini, I hope the kale has the desired effect, for both of our sakes! I'm going to have to get myself some too, I'm already craving that dish again!

Cindy, are you a kale lover? Are you someone who eagerly awaits kale season? If so, Im totally impressed. I don't have much experience with it, but my mom tells me my dad used to add it to mashed potatoes when I was a kid. Not a bad trick I think. As for bridal chard--I will keep my eyes open ;)

Michelle, thanks! And yes I have had seaweed salad before and I love it. Kale is a bit more mellow in flavour, but give it a try--it's healthy healthy stuff!
