Canadian Thanksgiving. The British way.

Glennans Sweet Potato and Plantain Crisps

This past weekend was Thanksgiving for Canadians and, though G and I were far from our families, we got ourselves a little turkey and celebrated the best way we knew how: jam the turkey in the fridge and head to the local pub for a drink.

It was so nice out we sat outside and nursed our drinks until it was time to head home and get that bird in the oven. Due to some poor planning on my part, half way home I realized I had a full bladder so we had no choice but to pop into another pub and order another drink so that I could use the loo. The turkey was just going to have to wait.

But we finally made it home (with a spring in our step) and while the bird was roasting I made some homemade stuffing, and G got reacquainted with his xbox.

It was just that kind of a perfectly lazy fall weekend. The days are getting shorter (and I was a bit tipsy) so I didn't get a picture of that turkey or the stuffing or anything else for that matter. Except of course for these sweet potato and plaintain chips that I was pretty thrilled with. I think some people aren't all that into the taste of plantain but I am. These things were thick and crunchy, not overly salty or greasy. Just perfect according to me. And they're a great thing to snack on while the turkey is in the oven and taking way longer than you expected it to.

So, now I've got a boatload of extra turkey and a couple of litres of turkey stock taking up all the space in my freezer. But for these two little displaced Canadians it was totally worth it.

How funny, my boyfriend is also playing on his xbox 360 a lot while I'm cooking in the kitchen. Well lets say: everybody a hobby.

Ahhh the pleasures I miss when I take a few days off from my blog reading....

"jam the turkey in the fridge and head to the local pub for a drink"

Finally an easy way to distinguish cultural differences between Canadians, and USA-ians!

Love the drunk dialing too!

Happy Thanksgiving!! I'm not a huge turkey fan and neither is my family so we opted for smoked pork chops instead. A very popular filipino dessert is plantain wrapped with spring roll wrapping and deep fried. It's like a plantain spring roll. It's so good! It's called "turon". Some people put jackfruit in it as well.

Aww, holidays far from home--I remember them well. The bonus is that, yes, you do get to celebrate them any way you want.

And I think your crisps look lovely--so autumnal.

Maaike, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. Although in G's defense I will say that he has had that xbox for a few years now and only just started playing it. So Im expecting this phase to be a short one ;)

Alisa, well you know G and I do love a tipple! And thanks for being receptive to my drunk dial as I screamed "Its thanksgiving! I'm making stuffing!" into your ear. ;)

Michelle, you know I don't think turkey is all that exciting either but its kind of the once a year (maybe twice) thing to do! But smoked pork chops sure sound good too. And I love the sound of that plantain spring roll. You'll have to tell me where to get one in T.O so I can look for it on my next trip home.

Kat, thank you! And yes, we did what we could--things always feel festive when you've got a turkey roasting even if it's just the two of you eating it!

Chris, double thanks to you!

Tea, true true. Although after many years of them away from home the bonus of doing them the way you want kind of wears off! Nah.. who am I kidding, we still have our fun ;)

Happy turkey day Michele...As usual, a weather report, although you probably were talking to this side of the ocean yesterday...it hit 30 degrees celsius in toronto yesterday - my mum in law threw on the air conditioning to counter the roasting bird...unbelievable...tropical toronto, we could have used the plantains here, correction, we could have grown the plantains here...!

Nicola, that is crazy. I can't even imagine it. It's kind of a shame because I love a good Ontario autumn. Hopefully this means winter will come later too for you guys.

Kevin, thank you very much!
