Cocoa muffins, an upcoming trip, and a vegan lunch

Cocoa muffins.
Where does the time go? It's been almost a week since I gloated about my recipe making accomplishments. I guess a girl can only gloat for so long before it starts to get a little excessive. And anyway, that braised chicken picture was starting to bore me. But I will say that I made my version of that recipe again last week, but I stewed some meatballs in the sauce, and man, that was some good stuff.
In the meantime I did make some really disappointing cocoa muffins last weekend. They had such potential--just look how they are bursting through at the tops. The taste, however, was about as boring as.. hmm... I'm trying to think of something really boring.. Let's just say it was as boring as boring is when you are really, really bored. A complete waste of 2/3rds of a cup of Valrhona cocoa powder. Adding insult to injury I had even used my madeleine pan for some of the batter which made the cutest little chocolatey madeleines. They did look cute in my garbage, but it was still quite heartbreaking.
In other exciting news, exactly one week from today this girl is going to be on a train to Paris.
I haven't decided which suitcase I'm going to bring yet because in Paris it's such a pain in the ass pushing your suitcase through the metro turnstiles. I know, you can get the attendant to open the gates at the side but sometimes it takes far too long to get their attention.
Ahh Paris.
How I missed you.
It's no coincidence that my trip coincides with the Salon des Saveurs, that mecca for gourmet food lovers that occurs twice a year in Paris. I never missed one while I lived there and I certainly don't intend to miss it now. My friend Alisa and I are experts at weaving our way around the French madames with their grocery trolleys and their "if it doesn't get out of the way, just run it over" attitudes. When the finest of French food products are at stake, all sense of order gets thrown out the window.
And people, you know I'm going to Mariage Frères. I stocked up before I moved, so it's not as if I'm running low, but I need my aromatherapy and there are always flavours that I have yet to try. I might even give that jaunty little tea boy that works in the shop in the 3rd a big old hug, just because I missed him and his cute little white outfit.
Alright, enough with the rambling. I should talk about something useful, like that nice little lunch I had recently at a place called Vitaorganic in Soho. It's vegan and organic and they seem to have this thing for raw and "gently cooked" foods to preserve the living enzymes.
For 4£ you can select 3 items from the many prepared dishes on display (behind glass of course).
I settled on a mixed plate with carrot and parsnip salad, a lentil salad and some lightly steamed broccoli. This maybe doesn't sound like the kind of lunch that gets your mouth watering, but it's right up my alley. And I'm neither vegan nor even vegetarian for that matter. But it's healthy and fresh and no matter what you pick you are doing your body good.
They also make fresh juices and smoothies to cure whatever ails you, such as the BlueBooster, which will apparently soothe and strengthen your throat.
You can either sit in and enjoy the general healthiness in the air or take your meal away. Oh, and you can get more or less than 3 items if you want, the price will vary accordingly. Makes sense, right?

Oh, I'm so jealous! I remember that Salon des Saveurs we went to together just like it was yesterday: the foie gras, the honey, the wine, the foie gras, the saucisson, the cheese, the jam, the foie gras... Did I mention the foie gras? Sigh...
So are you going to bring me back some foie gras? ;)
aaah, I'm so jealous of your Paris adventure...especially the aromatherapy jaunt to Mariage Freres (take a couple of whiffs for me). Enjoy!
have a great trip!!
Have fun! I am leaving for France myself on Monday! But instead of Paris first, I will hit the campagne! ;-)
...boring as....toasted bread that has been forgotten in the toaster for half a day???? But with cocoa powder. Eh, you never know what might work and what won't until you try. Was it a recipe from a source, or did you wing it?
I am so SO thrilled that you are going to be here. Yeah, I would have gone to the Salon des Sav on my own, and I have gone to MF without you, but it is just so not the same thrill. And when I stick a pot of tea under the nose of the stranger standing closest to me and say "ooo smell this"...they look at me funny and walk away.
Melissa, I will bring you back whatever you want if you promise to come pick it up. I will do whatever it takes to lure you to come visit me. Maybe if I brought a box of Hermes macarons back (short shelf life--must be eaten fresh!) it would even get you here faster. I might just try it, you know ;)
K&S, I will happily whiff away in your honour. I am counting down the days until I get there. My nose is already starting to twitch..
Chris, thank you very much!
Bea, have a wonderful time yourself!
Alisa, the recipe was from a source unfortunately. I don't mind so much if my own experiments fail, but when you put your trust in someone's recipe and it doesn't deliver it can really annoy me. And I don't bake all that much so when I do I want it to be completely worth it.
Have a brilliant time in Paris. I was there a few weeks ago ooing and ahing over food and drink. I had the best meal of my life (so far) in Chez Michel-I am still re-eating it in me head. Bring the BIGGEST suitcase you can get your paws on.
How pretty those muffins are, even if they fail in the taste department. It is like when you see David Beckham, and as hot as he is, you can't help but think "Don't speak. You'll ruin it" (sorry, I can't stand his speaking voice sometimes).
Have a wonderful sojurn in Paris, my dear, you deserve the vacation! I cannot wait to (jealously) hear the details.
Ooh, have fun! You've got me dreaming of tea salons and food salons--though hopefully no nightmares of scary French matrons with aggressive food carts.
Cj, glad to hear you had fun--Paris is definitely a blast and so pretty in the spring!
Tara, hmm, why don't I think I've ever even heard Beckham's speaking voice? How odd! But now I'm picturing it being all mickey mouse like so you've got me curious ;)
Tea, well the pushy matrons are all part of the Salon experience I guess. But I won't let it get in my way, not when there are french food products at stake!
Have recently moved in the opposite direction and am hoping to take in the Salon next weekend. Any hints (other than getting there early)?
Thanks
Shira,
Getting there early is the most important. I recommend attending either the friday or the monday if you can--the crowds are bit lighter. But even on friday or monday, by noon its shoulder to shoulder. So I go there first thing friday, expecting to zip through in about 2 or 2.5 hours max and then I get out, and I usually go back on the monday. Don't be afraid to say no to samples if they don't interest you, otherwise you can easily overdo it. There is so much to see that you kind of have to filter a bit--you can't stop at every cheese vendor or every jam vendor because it gets a bit overwhelming, so don't expect to be able to thoroughly get to know each and every vendor and their food product. It helps if you do some research in advance and have a list of a few things you know you definitely want to see/buy. But whatever your methods you will definitely enjoy it and each time you go you'll get a little bit better at making your way through and you'll know which vendors you want to make a beeline for. Have fun!
Your muffin looks really great, even you say that it's not good.
The color of muffin is very yummy.
Have a good good day in Paris! :)
i am so sad about your cocoa muffins. when i saw that in your title, my heart skipped a beat. cocoa and muffins sounds like such a great combo. sad. there must be a good recipe out there SOMEWHERE. random thought: do they have muffins in france? the only ones i remember eating were at the starbucks. (blushing).
Catalyst, I thought they looked pretty good too which made it that much more sad that they didn't taste all that good.
Cindym, apparently there is a muffin man at one of the markets in the 6th, but I never hunted him down. Perhaps in your honour I will try to find a better cocoa muffin recipe, this way when you come to visit me I will have fresh baked ones ready for you to devour. Im such a good friend, arent I ! ;)
Ooooohhh if you ever find the perfect recipe for pumpkin pie, do share!! I've been lusting after a good one since I returned from Montana 12 years ago!!
I gotta thank Kenny for leading me to your blog.. Gonna boil water now *gush*
