When it rains..

There are some days, weeks, even months, in your life when you wonder if anything exciting will ever happen to you. You start to feel like a total bore. But you settle into it--telling your friends about the latest movie you've seen with an enthusiasm that is meant to convey that the whole event was far more thrilling than it actually was.

And then one day you turn around and suddenly the shit has hit the fan and your life seems to have turned itself upside down and all you can think is: thank god I'm not wearing a skirt or you'd all be seeing my skivvies right now.
And so it goes.

Suddenly you are a girl with a litany of things to talk and/or complain about. Just don't get me started on people who don't understand the concept of stand right/walk left on escalators.

Let me summarize as briefly as possible the recent "excitement" in my life.

My camera broke.
I may be gluten intolerant.
And G and I are moving to London at the end of December.

This is where I need to take several deep breaths into a brown paper bag and beg you to send wine fast.

Ok, so the broken camera isn't life shattering. But it sure gets in the way of blogging. And the gluten intolerance thing, well a happy digestive system makes for a happy me. So I'll deal with it.
But oh my god, no more Paris? No more Mariage Frères tea at my disposal?

Are you sending the wine? Because I'm not joking. I could really use some.

Oh well. Sure, Paris isn't London, but then there's lots of nice foodbloggers in London, if that's any consolation :)

Here's my take on Paris versus London - Paris is a supermodel in haute couture. London wears cardigans, a bit frumpy, but cozy and familiar. And do they know how to make tea? And coffee's coming along...

And think how close you are to your cher Paris? Close your eyes and repeat: eurostar, eurostar, eurostar...

When I read you might be gluten intolerant, I said out loud, ohmygod. My husband has just discovered the same thing over the last few months - and he's now paired that up with dairy intolerance. So I managed to find a turkey stuffing recipe this weekend for Thanksgiving (Cdn). But once you know what it is, isn't it amazing the difference? Steve's stomach is feeling so much better, although i find myself eating cheese sandwiches in private...

And by the way Michele...it was over 20 degrees here this weekend...hurry home before it's too late and the snow and frost fly!!!

I rarely write but always read (with great pleasure). In fact it is you who inspired my very infrequent blogging (MyCentralParkKitchen).

The lovely thing about being turned upside down in Paris is that surely your skivvies are fabulous. And the lovely thing about moving to London is so much more to explore.

I can't wait for the movie from your visit to the Tate Modern.

Yours as a jasmine-tea-loving-walk-on-the-left-foodie,

Elizabeth

Oh no! No more Mariage Freres! Guess you'll have to stock up. I'm sure you'll have great adventures in London :)

Although I read your blog every chance I get, I've never posted a comment. This is the closest I can get to sending you a wonderful bottle of wine. Even if I could mail it, the Koreans just don't make great wine. (They are getting good at making nuclear weapons though!)

You are a fabulous woman and London needs you! Just remember that some anxiety is tolerable when you're living an exciting life. Think of all you'll have to write about in your memoir.

I was going to say something clever and then I saw Alisa's comment. So, yeah, what she said!

Plus, you are young (if you don't mind my saying so) and London doesn't have to be forever. If you end up loving it, maybe it will be. But if you don't, Paris will always be here waiting. And so will many of your friends!

Pille, it definitely is a consolation. And it will be much easier to visit those charming food bloggers in Edinburgh too ;)

Nicola, I must admit, it will be nice to be in my element with speaking English again--I can certainly turn on the charm much better in English than in French.
It's interesting to hear about your husband. And yes, as much as it will be difficult to watch out for hidden gluten, the payoff of a happy digestive system is so very worth it.
As for the weather in Toronto, I've still got a week before our trip--keep it warm for me ok? ;)

Elizabeth, you are right, my skivvy collection definitely went up a notch when I moved to Paris! And I definitely am looking forward to having a new adventure, even though I will be sad to leave Paris.

K & S, the MF thing seems to worry me the most. But I have a friend in Paris who seems willing to keep me well stocked through the mail. Although before I leave Paris, I have a feeling I may have a whole suitcase full of tea, just to be safe!

Brooke, London needs me? I like that. Thanks darlin! I will have a glass of wine tonight in your honour, because you are pretty darn fabulous yourself!

Alisa, look at you wrapping up and resolving all my concerns in one shot! Me and my MF tea addiction thank you, wholeheartedly. And my desire for wine thanks you too ;)

Meg, do I mind you saying that Im young? Absolutely not. You can say it as much as you want actually. And you're right, G and I have consoled ourselves with the thought that we can always move back to Paris. And maybe one day, we'll be rich enough to have an apartment in both cities. Dare to dream huh!

I know how "devastating" it must be to leave Paris. I know I will cry buckets when I do leave. But - you're moving somewhere also very nice. London is awesme! I'll move to London in a heartbeat! Lots of new stuff coming out of London where new cuisine/ experiments are concerned. And the English are really sweet people.
Don't feel too sad... like everyone else said "Eurostar". :-)
You can order tea from MF online too... but I'm sure you'll fall in love with the English teas too. The Mandarin Oriental has an excellent afternoon tea... Have fun!

oh goodness, the loss of Mariage Freres will be devastating...however, don't underestimate the joys of your newfound access to Harrod's food halls! i still dream about their counters...especially the chocolates...i'm getting jealous of you already.
point is, don't fret, pet. the blog will get very exciting as you go searching for decent british fare and count burberry trenchcoats on the street.

That's quite a bit of change to experience - and you'll make the best of it, I'm sure. There are so many gluten-free blogs out there, and I bet London will be wonderful. ((((((Hugs)))))

You are not gluten intolerant. You just have to sort out your third chakra, and that is your power point: the point of fear and decisions. Good luck.

Oh my dear. That is a lot at once.

Perhaps it is just time for new adventures--gluten-free, British adventures. You didn't know how much you would love MF until you found them; just think about the new things you will be falling in love with in London. And those Brits, they know a thing or two about tea as well.

But my condolences (in lieu of wine), it is a shock I am sure.

Um, whatever with anonymous up there. If you are gluten-intolerant, and you have finally found out -- celebrate! Write to me, and I'll be happy to give you plenty of tips. Also, you have no idea how your life will expand and bloom when you are finally healthy.

And London? Neal's Yard. The Ivy. Tea at Brown's. You won't be hurting. Especially when Paris is a three-hour chunnel train away.

Brava!

Your blog is great in Paris. It will be great in London. It would be great in Wisconson or Iceland for that matter!

Michèle,
Maybe I'm the only one here, but I'd choose London over Paris any time! I'm pretty sure you will love it there, the only downer are the prices...
And you can always console yourself with some food shopping, the variety is fantastic ;) If your looking for a fancy shop for kitchen appliances, try Heal's (http://www.heals.co.uk/icat/kitchen).

LPC, admittedly, Im not sad about moving to London, its only the leaving Paris part that hurts ;) But I am excited about a new adventure!

5%C, Im adding Harrod's food hall to my list at once! My list of things to check out is getting longer by the day , which is helping to take the sting out of the move ;)

Cyndi, you are right about the gluten free blogs--it certainly makes the whole idea of it much easier to deal with!

Anonymous, will that cure the runs?

Tea, my boyfriend (who is part scottish) keeps telling me that I will be quite happy with British tea too. But just in case, I have a friend here who is willing to ship me some if ever there is an emergency ;)

Shauna, if I am in fact gluten intolerant I have to tell you that since I am already very familiar with your blog, the thought of going gf for the rest of my life is much less daunting than it might have been otherwise! I will email you!

5%C, thanks so much!

Nicky, you know I have a lot of friends who suddenly seem to want to come visit me once I move to London--strangely not all of them rushed to visit me in Paris, so I dont think you're the only one! And thanks for the heads up on the appliance shop--I will check it out!

that's a shame what's happening to you...well i would love to share with you a bit of wine! You know, Paris is great but London's not that far. And there's lots of fun out there. I am pretty sure that you'll find good adresses there too. I left Paris for Caen (Normandy) and for the moment I am happy with it...and when i miss it, just take the train :))
