When I say brrr I mean it..

I have come to realize lately when talking to my mom that my 3 years of living outside of Canada have really spoiled me. We are hitting 18c these days in Paris and I'm ready to get out the winter coat and wear my fuzziest sweaters. My mom tells me that in Toronto, it's only 5c, and people are still holding on to those last days of warmth, heading out of doors in nothing but a t-shirt-- a spring jacket at most.
Huh?
I blink my eyes once, then twice in disbelief.
"You're exaggerating, right mom?" I ask her.
"No. You would look silly here if you were wearing a winter coat right now."
This from a woman who has been known to wear turtlenecks in the summer and when confronted about it will wrap her arms around herself, lower her eyelids in a display of extreme happiness and say "Umm..I just love the warmth.."
So you see why I'm confused.

Have I been away from Canada for so long that the idea of a t-shirt and 5 degree weather seem like two concepts that should not be used in the same sentence? I mean, my hot water bottle is already my best friend, and I even wore a scarf while watching tv the other night. It was fuzzy and glamourous and new, sure, but it was still chilly in my apartment. So the wearing of the scarf was not only a private moment of fabulousness, it was also completely warranted.

In 2 weeks G and I are heading to Canada to attend 2 weddings. My mom has assured me that I will not need my winter coat during our stay.
Mom, I love you, and yes that Canadian blood still runs through my veins, but what strange madness is this?
My winter coat is coming with me. And a few scarves. A hat. And a pair of gloves.
I'll leave the boots in Paris, but only because you think I'll look silly.

ANY private moment of fabulousness is ALWAYS warranted. And when you can take that fab scarf out in public, and be publicly fabulous, you seize that moment!

Michele...It really isn't that froid (today it's going to be 17 or so here in TO). And the ravines' leaves are turning slowly to their poetic best...and the markets are brimming...and...okay forget it. I can't deny it. Winter's coming...i've pulled the plants off the deck...socks out of the drawer...a scarf or two round my neck...and I saw my breath the other night when I let the cats in. I don't miss winter when it's gone - I just blank it out. 2 weddings though? Wonderful. My wedding was October 1 (a couple of years back) and it was 21 degrees and outside on a terrace...a beautiful day (with incredible food).

Have a wondrous trip home.

It'll all come back to you once you set foot back on Canadian soil. The early mornings are chilly but once the sun comes out ... it's beautiful autumn!

Enjoy the weddings!

You just need a hot afternoon with some Cuban to warm you up!

Today is supposed to be 24 in Toronto, and the weekend is looking rather glorious. Crisp mornings and sunny afternoons.

But I'll admit, yes, my dear it is full-fledged autumn. There can be a bit of a nip in the air and there is that brightness to the sky that only comes in October. As you know, I'm one for snuggly warmth of sweaters, so I'm in heaven.

Whatever the wardrobe, you'll look fab ... most particularly in an espresso coloured ensemble, I'm sure.

Alisa, well Im sure you will be there to witness the first public unveiling of my scarf. Why is it that as soon as I bought that scarf it got warm out again?

Nicola, yes Ive come to understand that my mom's report of 5 degrees was just a passing cold spell. I am hearing good things about the weather in T.O lately, which has me looking forward to that lovely fall weather that I miss!

Omo's mom, dude, doubling up is good--and make tea!

Ivonne, you're right, Im sure my canadian genes will kick in in record time!

David, some cuban what?

Tara, well 24 sounds right up my alley. And I agree with you on the sweaters, I always love pulling them out of storage in the fall!
