I ate this cookie..

almond & pistachio cookie from a random bakery in Paris

.. and then I found out that pretty doesn't always mean good.

Nice work on the checkerboard pattern though.
And extra points for the big old chocolate nubbin in the middle.
Next time, I think I'll just ask for the nubbin.

You're a nubbin! That can be the name of your next blog. Nubbin Nibbles.

kyIt is a lovely looking specimen, Michèle - what did you find wrong with it? Taste, texture, sweetness? Chocolate nubbins though, along with chocolate buttons and chocolate doodads, are always welcomed.

I'll venture a guess: was it at the Levain du Marais bakery? I haven't seen that particular cookie, but I've had the exact same experience there with a pistachio chocolate financier that ended its brief tasteless life in the nearest trash can...

On the other hand your pic is great (as usual) so, who could possibly say that they wouldn't like to taste it, mmh ?
I know a place nearby my home, the "Malinaux" boulangerie (there are 3 of them in the Marais area :rue St Paul, rue Vieille du Temps and rue de Rivoli), that make exactly the same kind of lovelly but tasteless cookies... I remember having tasted one which looks like a raspeberry and vanilla checkerboard... "étouffe chrétien" for sure !! Beware next time you are in the area :D !!
Cheers,
Fred

Hi Cindy, Nubbin Nibbles, really? Somehow I feel like I'd end up talking about the Teletubbies all the time or something. But we could make it your new nickname instead, ok?

Hi Tara, well it was heavy on the almond extract and was way to big for how dense it was. So although it was nice and moist, the other points overruled. And doodads, yes, doodads are good too!

Hi Clotilde, no it wasn't, but extra points for trying! I find myself often disappointed with pistachio flavours, they always seem to taste of almond extract to me. I am oh so fussy about my pistachio.
It's just irksome I tell you. Very, very irksome. ;)

Hi Fred, you win the prize for cookie identification for sure. I stopped by the one on Vieille du Temple after a trip to L'As du Falafel last week and was drawn in by all the checkerboard cookies in the window. I think the cookie has great potential, but it was sadly disappointing.

My girls liked what I bought that day, but I won't be buying them again either. I hadn't realized that the chocolate dot was a nubbin (it was not eaten by me), if I had I might have nipped off that nubbin for myself.

Nice photo :)

I was just writing about that-funny! Whenever I look for scones I always am tempted by the eye candy-the prettiest ones. And more often than not disappointed! Too bad with those cooks. At least you got a snapshot for us. They are aesthetically appealing...

Ahah! Michelle's Rule

Cookies taste is inversly proportional to it's looks :P

Ah Michele, it's refreshing to see that you are still your same self, making me laugh every post, even though I have been in Florida eating out of chain restaurants for the last week! Your pictures are divine (especially those scallops) and I can't wait to see how the rest of your resolutions play out! Poor dear, those evil cookie makers should spell out "bad cookie" in frosting on the nubbin next time!

Hi Alisa, oh you should always take the nubbin. I mean, i've had better nubbins but still, the nubbin is the most coveted part.

Hi Mona, we are such suckers for a pretty face, arent we? And somehow I dont think it will stop me from picking the pretty ones, I'll just have to deal with the disappointments one at a time. Its all in the name of research!

Hi Clare, hmm I may have to continue to test out that theory. Although, there are some bad looking ones that taste equally bad. Perhaps I could become known as the girl who buys all the ugly cookies!

Hi Michelle, Aw shucks, glad to have you back. And frosting on the nubbin? Fabulous idea!

well I would have done just like you. It is pretty and I would have though pretty means good. Was it that bad??

Hi K &S, the nubbin saved the day, definitely!

Hi Pille, it is a good rule, but I'll have to test out how accurate the theory is. I'm still not sure I'd be able to turn a blind eye to the pretty ones though ;)

Hi Bea, no it definitely wasn't terrible, in fact I did manage to consume the whole thing. But I was so enthused by its looks that in the end its taste did disappoint me. There are perhaps people who think its a great cookie, after all taste is completely subjective but it just wasnt for me.

Clare's rule is good but not beyond debate. However I must admit that my most favourite of cookies are the most basic, blah-looking things whose attempts at decor are fork marks on the top.
Thanks for the photo... even if the taste didn't match, it sure is nice to look at!
I am a big pistachio fan myself and guess I would be just as disappointed in a second-rate taste.

Hope the snow is staying away for your sake now ;-)

Hi Diningdica, ah! you're a peanut butter cookie fan are you? Well I certainly wouldn't turn away from one either ;) And yes, the snow only lasted the day and has stayed away, so Im very happy!

That cookie's just like you: very pretty, with something extra-sweet in the middle!

Now go work on that meme, girl...

That's too bad. Sigh! Looks certainly can be deceiving. I like your photo, though! I'd buy the cookie based on the photo.

I do like peanut butter cookies yes. But another I like that gets the same kind of treatment is lemon criss-cross (lemon cookie with raisins) Some people aren't raisin fans but I am ;D

Glad the snow went away for you!

The little chain Boulangerie Malineau ? They always have large, pretty cookies in the window, perfect for presentation on an after-dinner coffee tray or in a basket at a mothers' luncheon (not quite there yet myself). I remember sampling one of their chocolate and pistachio half-and-half financiers and not tasting anything but sugar.

David, one word: Awwwwww! That just earned you 2 macarons next time we're at Herme. and meme? what meme? ;)

Paz, I'm glad you like the photo-- It's definitely a good looking cookie!

DiningDica, lemon cookies with raisins huh? hmmm, I might need some convincing on that one ;)

Jenn, well I hate to give the place a bad rap after I only tried one cookie! They have such pretty things that I will definitely give them another try. Although, I think I'll avoid the financier!
