A dreamy monday morning at the Salon du Chocolat..

Jean-Paul Hévin Macaron

Today was a big day for me. I tasted my first macaron. Ever. Many people talk about them, and generally rave about them, and the uber-talented even make their own, at home, in their free time. Since moving to Paris, I see them everywhere. It seems every bakery on every street corner makes their own version. I've been tempted, it's true, but something has always held me back. I knew that I didn't want just any macaron, I wanted one of the best.

Well, today was my lucky day.

This morning I headed off to meet some new friends at the Salon du Chocolat, a large chocolate trade show held every October in Paris. There I was, at the Jean-Paul Hévin booth, staring at what was judged this past June as the best macaron in Paris.

Now how could I pass that up? I watched as they carefully wrapped it up for me. And yes, dear friends, I waited until I could get home and take a picture before even taking a single bite. But as soon as my teeth sank into it, I had an uncontrollable urge to run back to the kitchen and take another picture for your viewing and drooling pleasure. Perhaps this is rather unsophisticated of me to say, but the inside tasted like the best chocolate brownie I have ever had. And however they get that crunchy bit on the top is beyond me, but it was heavenly. I want more..

The Salon du Chocolat was exciting to say the least. By the end of it, I was on quite a chocolate high; unnaturally giddy and carrying many more things than I realized I had purchased. When you're faced with some of the best chocolatiers in the world, you just have to let loose and sample everything that is offered to you.

Madame Setsuko Chocolatiers in action

A stop at Madame Setsuko found us gaping in amazement at the fine details being piped on each individual chocolate. A sample of their green tea ganache found its way into my mouth (how does that always happen?) and I was instantly in love. Although, I will say that it was a good thing we had arrived early, because by noon, you could barely get yourself near their booth at all to watch them in action.

Madame Setsuko Green Tea Ganache

Even the sandwiches contained chocolate. I feasted on the Foie Gras sandwich with Fig and Chocolate Chutney and it was delicious. The sweetness of the chutney was a nice compliment to the Foie Gras.

Foie gras and chocolate sandwiches

In the end, I came home with a lovely pile of stuff.

From Maison du Chocolat: a tablette of 100% cocoa, and chocolate covered almonds.
From Jean-Paul Hévin: a chocolate macaron and a tablette of milk chocolate with caramel
From Baillardran: two caneles, traditional and chocolate
From Madame Setsuko: green tea ganaches.
Oh and somehow a sample packet of Nestle Quik hot chocolate made its way into my bag too...

I will expand on some of these treasures as soon as my hands stop shaking from this sugar rush. I need to go lie down now..

The Madame Setsuko green tea ganache look just darling in your photo. Now the one I sampled seems hardly enough; we need to go back!

Sometime when we find ourselves in the 6th, we'll have to sample macarons chez Gerard Mulot, who makes a darn good chocolate version, though possibly not Hevin heavenly.

Exploring the Salon with you was terrific fun. Will without a doubt take me several days to come down from the caffeine high....

Congratulations again on the fabulous blog! See you soon - je t'embrasse, Jenn

What a lovely day, and gorgeous macaron! Your "first" was truly a fantastic specimen - always good to start with the best. I cannot imagine how you all restrained yourselves from utter gluttony.

I think Paris is the right place to try a macaroon. I've only had the Kosher for Passover macaroons by Manischwitz, so I'm sure that doesn't really count. :)

I'm going tomorrow and can't wait!

Let's go macaroon tasting together - I haven't had one since coming to Paris either. They are my absolute favorites, but the lines at Lauduree and Pierre Herme are too long sometimes!

Hooooo boy, those are some beautiful finds, Michele! I lost my macaron virginity at Laduree, and while I have no regrets, that Hevin macaron looks pretty incroyable. And that foie gras sandwich with fig and chocolate chutney? Oh my. I'm kicking myself for having never made le Salon du Chocolat a priority, despite being in Paris for TWO of them. Grrr.

Hi Jenn, and you too were a fabulous chocolate exploration partner! And I will gladly go to Gerard Mulot anytime. I tried to find his shop once as I had heard his lemon tarts were legendary, but I walked up and down the rue de Seine and could not find it. So its still on my to do list.
And do you know I was actually thinking of going back to the Salon this morning? But the chocolate overload convinced me not to.. ;)

Hi Tara, well the gluttony still seems to be rather reserved because after only a few bites of chocolate you can already feel the caffeine kicking in.. Having had no breakfast myself before I went to the Salon, my belly was being somewhat fussy and kept me in check. But yes, the macaron was wonderful and Im happy I waited!

Hi Beth, well now Im curious about the kosher macaron! and sure it counts!

Hi Christine, I hope you have a fabulous time. I was tempted to invite myself along with you and Cindy today but I think I can only handle one day of excitement in a row. Im sure you will love it, I'd love to hear what treasures you go home with. And ANYTIME you want to go on a macaron tasting, Im there!

Hi Clare, you are funny! Glad to get you drooling!

Hi Molly, yes the Hevin macaron was wonderful, but of course I have no others to compare it to, so I will have to continue my taste testing and next on my list is Laduree. Its a hard job, and Im only doing it for the blog of course. And the sandwich was quite lovely! Both were spread on rather thinly which turned out to be the perfect amount, as neither one overwhelmed the other.

My god, Michele, I took a look at this yesterday and honestly had to stop reading - I was getting too envious! I've only now gathered up the courage to come back here and finish. That macaron looks WAY better than any I've had the pleasure of eating (or, ahem, making), and the description of that sandwich had me practically in delirium tremens. I've decided one thing already: nothing will stop me from being there next year!!

Hmm, really enjoyed reading this entry of chocolate. Now I want some, but alas, I am nowhere near you to taste all of this chocolate goodness. How were the green tea ganaches? Sounds like that could be pretty interesting.

Oh! yes Michele, when I was in Paris last time I had a coffee in front of a Salon de The (in the Rue Bonaparte corner with Rue Saint Jacques)that had people outside standing in line waiting to get in..we were like "what's all this fuss about??" we went close to have a look, and yes, Macarons, that was the reason...;) Your sweet shopping looks REALLY amazing!! Besos

Hi Paz, it was the best way I could think to describe it! I think it may actually have been the brownie of my dreams...

HI Melissa, well let me say that I am happy to make you envious since I drool over your creations all the time! Looking at that macaron picture keeps tempting me too though, I have to admit. I wish you could have been at the Salon, you would have loved it! I'll pencil you in for next year. Its definitely worth the trip, and as a bonus, you get to see me too.. Now how can you lose! ;)

Hi Wanda, the green tea ganaches were lovely! They are made with white chocolate, creme fraiche and green tea powder. The flavour was refreshing, not overwhelming at all.. They were creamy on the inside and green throughout.. I would definitely buy them again.. or who knows, maybe I should try to make my own! But I think the quality of the green tea powder is key here too..

Hi Tattum, yes Im thinking I may have to make my way to Hevin's Salon de The and try some other flavours of his macarons.. They are just too darn good! And the sweet shopping was definitely fun, Im already looking forward to next year ;)

Hmmm...no mention about visiting my pal and all-time hero, Henri LeRoux from Brittany for his amazing CBS caramels (and his buckwheat flavored chocolates too...) Glad you found something yummy. Soon you'll be able to make your own chocolate macarons...perhaps by, um, Thursday?

Hi Michele, I am so intrigued by the Green Tea Ganache, it simply looks ravishing (hope this term works here, too ;) Would love to try and need to find out if those or similar ones can be found in Munich as well...

Hi David, we did look for him, but alas he eluded us. Im not sure I'll be making my own macarons anytime.. And you didnt mean prune macarons did you?

Hi Oliver, the green tea ganache was a wonderful surprise! and I agree, they do look lovely dont they. They are made with white chocolate, creme fraiche and green tea powder. The green tea flavour was definitely there but it wasnt overwhelming, and Im sure it was definitely some excellent quality green tea. Unfortunately Madame Setsuko doesn't have a shop in Paris so I may have to wait until next year before I can have some more!

Aaah! Oooh! Deliciously beautiful pictures!
Well, I'm yet to have my first macaron. Again, there have been quite a few tempting posts recently about making or eating macarons (Melissa, J @ Kuidaore, David Lebovitz and now you) - so I need to either get down to London to buy some or bake some myself!
The Green Tea Ganache look really intriguing!

Your photos are so wonderful!
I must admit I entertained a notion of returning tuesday, just to buy the green tea ganache from Madame Satsuko. Didn't do it. I had a wonderful time with both of you.
Here's my two cents on "the best" macaron's I have ever tried:
Pierre Hermé
Maison du Chocolat
Laduree ties with Dalloyou
Gros bisous!
