More fruit and melty cheese...

Beurre Hardy Pear (French butter pear)
That time of year is arriving that reminds me most of home. My niece and nephews are back in school, and the busy apple season is getting into full gear at my brother's orchard. I remember long days spent helping out in their bakery, when I would return home, exhausted, with the sweet smell of sugar and vanilla oozing out of every pore of my body.
Now, far away from home, I can't help but notice the bounty of apples and pears that are making their arrival at the markets. What I would give to wake up just one early morning and find myself at the orchard, walking across the dewy grass to pick a few apples, with the dogs running about, the chickens clucking, and my niece and nephews getting into mischief as usual.
Since the orchard came into our lives, I have a new appreciation for the simple beauty of an apple or a pear. Crisp, and sweet, dangling from the trees, there isn't a more beautiful offering.
With my feet moving at a slow and homesick pace at the market, the desire for comfort food motivated my every purchase.
But then again, I'm in Paris.
So it had to have a little bit of oomph.

Behold the Pear and Brie Croque Monsieur.
A cure for homesickness? Well maybe not. But it sure took my mind off of my troubles for a bit. Part of the fun was in finding a new pear at the market that I had never heard of before. It is called a Beurre Hardy, which is an heirloom pear that is otherwise known as a French Butter Pear. Even though at first glance its skin seems rather dull with its mossy-green colour, it is quite pretty, and the ones I purchased had a close to perfect robust pear shape. Ok, maybe I'm being a bit of a geek about it but remember, I'm homesick. In any case, it was delicious. Juicy and sweet, I gobbled one up as soon as I got home.
As for the brie? Well, just look at that picture at the bottom, where it is just bulging out from under its rind. Enough said.
The Pear and Brie Croque Monsieur, inspired entirely by Williams Sonoma.
(which is really just a pear and brie grilled sandwich if you don't have the proper equipment.. but it sure sounds better the Williams-Sonoma way)
Take a pear, rinse it, slice it up. (I left the skin on).
Saute the slices in a pan in a bit of butter until slightly softened.
Spread butter on one side of 2 slices of bread.
On the un-buttered side, place the sauteed pears and some slices of brie.
Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
Fry in a grill pan or fry pan until browned to your liking, and the cheese is melted.
Don't stop to take pictures, just eat it.

Sorry about your homesickness - but I can't imagine a more perfect place to BE homesick than in Paris to take some of the edge off.
I love brie croque monsieurs - grilled cheese on this side of the Atlantic ;-) but never tried it with pears. How clever.
Thanks for sharing
My poor little Canadian abroad - I was eating a honeycrisp this morning and thinking of you. I wanted to send one along, but I didn't know if they'd survive the journey! I must say, between you and Melissa's post today, I seem destined to eat fruit and cheese (grilled) for dinner tonight - and I'm far from complaining! Looks absolutely delectable!
Oh, man, Brie de Meaux! I served some at the end of a dinner a few months ago, and everyone swooned. So good! I'm dying to try your pear and brie sandwich now.
that looks simply delish!
I loved your little extra stuff on your profile. Reminded me of the movie Amelie (loved it). : )
That sounds incredible - I've never thought of putting a pear on bread, though I will definitely try it now! I get nostalgic for home around this time of year too...but isn't it wonderful how food can take us back? Great pictures!
Hi Ruth, I agree, Paris certainly can distract me from my homesickness. And if the sights don't do it, then some big load of fancy chocolate would do the trick Im sure :)
Hi Tara, well you are sweet for thinking of me! Im sure the poor thing would turn up as bruised as can be though, if not brown and mushy by the time it got here.
Somehow the combination of fruit and cheese is just too appealing to resist. And Melissa's fig pizza is killer! I hope you managed to satisfy your dinner cravings!
Hi Dawna, I'll tell you that I have never eaten so much cheese in my life as I do now, with all the gorgeous cheeses available. They actually say that you could eat a different french cheese every single night for over a year without having the same one twice. That's alot of cheese!
Hi Lady Lavender, it was definitely a tasty lunch, I gobbled it up a little too quickly. And thank you for the comments on my profile. I just updated it about a month ago. What a compliment that it reminds you of the movie Amelie, I agree its a great movie! :)
Hi Michelle, it was my first time trying pear on a sandwich too, and I was very pleasantly surprised with it. They were quite tender even before I sauteed them, and they just melted right into the brie. yum.. Im glad you liked the pictures!
oh michele, that just looks exquisite...everytime i think of pears and brie, i also think walnuts...do you reckon a sprinkle of walnuts may be good, or would it detract from the simple perfection of the croque monsieur as is?
Perhaps, it's not a good idea for me to check your blog first thing in the morning. Makes me even hungrier! ;-)
I think I'll have to try this pear and brie recipe. Looks soooo good.
Enjoyed reading about your time on the orchard!
Paz
Hi J, im so glad you like it. I think the walnuts sound like a wonderful addition.. sometimes you may just want it simple, but other times a little flourish is just what you need. ;) I think the extra crunch would be excellent!
Hi Paz, well i'll have to post some breakfast foods soon to really get your belly growling! Definitely try the recipe, its quite easy and its an interesting combination. I've also seen another grilled version that Im tempted to try, with peaches, goat cheese and proscuitto..yum! and i know you like your peaches! :)
How did you know I like fruit and cheese and bread together? ;) This is beautiful, I'm definitely trying it soon! I can just imagine the sweetness of the pears with the mellow nutiness of the brie and the cripness of the bread... I'm getting so hungry just thinking about it! I hope it helped your homesickness a bit - but just think, if you were home, you'd probably be missing Paris!
For J and Michèle, how about a walnut or other nut bread? The texture and flavour would probably add that bit of depth that nuts provide, without marring the gorgeous melting insides of the pear and brie. Good lord, now I'm thinking about fruit and cheese ... again. Obsessing, really.
Hi Melissa, ah shucks, I thought you might like it :) The combination was really nice. And you're right, I know that one of the hardest things I will have to face if I go back to Canada is the loss of alot of these raw french cheeses that I have grown to love. I think I would cry.
Hi Tara, obsess away my friend, I love the idea! That would also be a nice bread for a brie (or camembert) and fig jam grilled sandwich.. oh.. the possibilities are endless.. i think im in love with melted cheese :)
oh the brie!
oh the pear!
Oh the bread!
*sigh*
I don't think I could add anything else :)
Hi Michele
Guess what.... I tagged you again..... so you can redeam yourself :p
it is the 23 post 5 sentance meme have fun!
Hi Clare, glad you like the sandwich! And the meme has been done and in record time too :)
Awww, I was just about to make myself a sandwich but sadly I don't have any pear or brie in my fridge. Thanks for the wonderful post as I must swing by the shops tommorrow and grab some as that sandwich looks divine.
It certainly was :) YAY!
It's also good with pear and
Gorgonzola. Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm salivating! What a wonderful sandwich and the gorganzola idea is supurb!
