A week in Paris..

Tartelette Framboise
I am a list maker. There are countless lists that I maintain on an excel spreadsheet. Things to do today, things to do this week, things to achieve within the month, the year, my lifetime. I am constantly referring to them, making sure that I am on track, that no goal will go forgotten only to haunt me one day. And once an item makes its way onto my list(s) I become rather obsessed with completing the task. From washing the kitchen floor to my most lofty and challenging goals.
Number 5 on my list of things to achieve in my lifetime: live in Paris.
And here I am.
After 6 days in the city, my feet are sore and my legs suffer from a constant and dull ache, marks of my enthusiasm to discover this city that I now call home. From day one, my mind has been firmly focused on the fact that this time I'm not a tourist. I live here. This is my city now. And it is with this idea in mind that I have gone about familiarizing myself with my new neighbourhood and doing my best to blend in with the locals. I have walked and walked, and walked some more, some days with a destination in mind, other days wandering aimlessly, but always with a big smile on my face. (Ok, so maybe I did restrain the smile a little bit. I wouldn't want to reveal my true geekiness by walking around Paris smiling at myself, now would I? I'm working on my Parisian decorum, you see.)

watching the birds at the Luxembourg Gardens
On Wednesday I found myself at the Luxembourg Gardens, where I sat myself on a chair and watched the pigeons bathing in a puddle in front of me. I pulled out my trusty notebook, which follows me everywhere, and began to write. I couldn't help but think: "Hmm. Hemingway used to do this here too.." Although my pages were filled with nothing more than many variations of "Oh how I love Paris". But I'm sure that I can be forgiven for having a rather preoccupied mind lately.

Notre Dame
Wednesday was a rather hot and sunny day and after a time I headed back in the direction of home. I took a slow stroll past the Notre Dame Cathedral and through Ile St-Louis, where I found myself standing in front of Amorino; a small store specializing in Italian gelato that Clotilde had recently written a favourable review about. How could I resist? Did I not deserve this for all the blisters I have endured? Hard work deserves a fitting reward, and gelato suited me just fine. I ordered a cup with 2 flavours: Caffe and Creme Caramel and headed toward the river to enjoy the view as I savoured every creamy bite. I could have stood there forever, until I realized I was just a girl by a river, with an empty gelato cup in hand. A rather unfortunate state to find oneself in. I made a mental note to add the following to my list of things to achieve in 2005--try all flavours of Amorino gelato. Now this is a task that I will thoroughly enjoy. Look at me aiming high, a woman full of ambition.

an empty cup of gelato.. so very sad..
It has taken all my strength to resist coming home from my walks with a new dessert discovery each time. How can you not love a city where you can actually get a Creme Brulee to go? The Tartelette Framboise pictured at the top did somehow find itself in my hands. Funny how that happens, isn't it? Today I came home with some large and plump Saucisse de Toulouse from the local Butcher's. If they taste as good as they look I'll give you a full report next time.
So, as you can imagine, I find myself this past week in a bit of a daze. As soon as I can get this dreamy fog out of my brain and focus on the computer for more than 5 minutes at a time, I will fill you in. But I can barely be in our apartment for more than 30 minutes before my wanderlust is gnawing at me again to get myself back outside. In fact......

hi michele, glad to hear you're settling in...cheers,j
Michele,
What fun you're having in your new environment!
How beautiful the Luxembourg Gardens look; and so does your photo of the Notre Dame.
I love your list of trying all the flavors of Amorino gelato. Go for it! ;-)
The creme brulee looks delicious!
Continue to have fun with your explorations!
Paz
I'm just drooling with envy. What I wouldn't give for a good gelato. Oh, and of course, to live in Paris! I'm so glad you made it and that you're finding so many things to entertain yourself with. I think a visit will definitely be in order soon. Until then, I was wondering how a big cup of Amorino would fare shipped to Scotland in a box of dry ice? ;)
Add me to the list of the envious, Michele! You are one lucky girl. Whenever your wanderlust subsides and you return to the computer, I'd love to know what neighborhood you're living in, if that's not too nosy. My last two Paris stays have been in the 11th, right on the edge of the Marais, and I've been known to hit the Amorino there, on rue Vieille du Temple. Not too far from the one you went to, on the Ile St. Louis. You could do a walking tour of the city, just following the map from Amorino to Amorino! Ahhh. Paris. Soak it up, m'dear.
Hi J, thanks!
Hi Paz, it is definitely a world of fun. Im glad you like the photos. The Luxembourg Gardens are one of my favourite places to sit, the photo doesnt quite capture the size of them either. I'll keep you posted on my gelato tastings :)
Hi Melissa,
Well now that I've tried the good stuff, Im sure there will be no more ben and jerrys for me. Which may be a bad thing if I ever move away from a location where Amorino's can be found.. And yes, you have to visit, its not negotiable. ;) Amorino does have take out containers you know!
Hi Molly,
I am feeling rather lucky, and I've been giggling like a schoolgirl since we got here. We are in the 3rd in Le Marais, a short walk from the Amorino on rue Vieille du Temple. So there will be many stops at Amorino in the near future I'm sure. I just have to pace myself. The walking tour of Amorino stores sounds like a good idea. Now I just have to do the Berthillion taste test comparison..:)
Lucky you Michelle. Another envious blogger on this side of the Atlantic. Looking forward to read about your personal discovery of Paris.
What a wonderful opportunity. I can't wait to live vicariously through your posts.
Oh, you're back and I love this first Paris write-up. You're going to have such an amazing time exploring the city and I cannot wait to read more!
Ma chère Michèle! So glad to have you back and posting, and here I am, joining the throngs of the envious! Good thing green is my colour. The last time I was in Paris I was too young to remember, and I believe it must be an utter sin against food-loving not to have been back since. I am happy to live vicariously through your experiences!
Michele!
Those photos are fabulous, it is so *sigh* worthy. Oh well, what can I say? except I am jealous, it is so much fun exploring a new city and claiming all the little corners and finding hidden gems. I can wait to live vicariously through your new experiences :)
I am glad you are enjoying yourself so much. Keep walking, it is the best way to understand the city. And keep smiling, it is so rare to see people smiling on their own in Paris, we need them.
Hi Ana, Ruth and Amy, thanks! It is a bit nerve wracking to try to describe thoughts and feelings of being in this city and do it proper justice, but I will do my best :)
Hi Tara, green is your colour huh! very cute :) well I don't think you are in anyway suffering from lack of proper food loving, although I would be happy to see you come to Paris, for my own selfish reasons! We would eat until we'd explode my friend :)
Hi Clare, thanks, im glad you like the photos! It is fun to discover the city, I think it would take me forever to fully discover everything, but Im in no hurry :)
Hi Gracianne, I am enjoying myself immensely. It is a wonderful city. And the added benefit of the walking is that I can work off all the extra desserts that Im eating. And as for the smiling, well I think it will take a while for that to wear off :)
Thanks for bringing your experiences to people like me who have not visited Paris before. Wonderful writing Michele and I love those tartlets.
hi Boo, thanks for the nice words. And yes, the dessert was good, and there are so many more to try :)
Being a girl with an empty ice cream cup looking out at the water is beyond fab when the river is the Seine. What could be better? Sigh. Lucky lady.
Hi Rachael, even without the ice cream it was a fine moment, you're right :) Although it does give me reason to keep that cup filled, there are so many conveniently located Amorino's in the area, how can I resist?
Hi Michele,
I'm glad you are having a nice time discovering Paris and some of the yummy things the city has to offer. I'm sure you'll be telling us about all the rest as time goes on. =)
Hi Michele,
not do we only both keep a log of books we've read and films we've seen, but we are also both list makers:) I have a small lined notebook that I carry with me all the time, jotting down things to do, and then feel immensely happy when I get to cross something out again:)
Sounds like you're settling in nicely in Paris. I envy you - I've never even visited the place yet (maybe it's for the best - I don't think I could stay away from that Tartelette Framboise. Or two)..
Enjoy!
seriously though - I have decided that it is A) impossible to take a bad picture in Paris and B) especially impossible to take a bad food picture...
What is it the light or something?
Enjoy the city - we here in Vancouver will be waiting more lovely shots from one of the great Eternal cities.
Hi Reid, thanks so much! I am enjoying it immensely. I've already decided that Im going to stay here forever. Am I getting ahead of myself? :)
Hi Pille, so I'm not crazy! its nice to know someone else has the same compulsion :) I just have to convince my boyfriend that its actually quite normal.
I have definitely found it difficult to resist all the different desserts that stare out at me from the many bakeries that I walk past daily. I never really had a sweet tooth before but now I can barely keep it under control!
Hi Jen, I think you just might be right about the pictures of Paris and food.. although I've always wondered if its possible to catch a flattering photo of kraft macaroni and cheese, especially if one eats it with ketchup.. these are the kinds of things I ponder.. perhaps I am a bit mad :)
Hi Michele - I didn't know you've moved to Paris, how long are you staying there? I normally stay near the bon marche, it's handy for the last minute shopping before I come back to London ;) I hope you are settling in and that you enjoy life there (I'm sure you will)...
H keiko, we've been here almost 3 weeks now and we are staying here indefinitely, meaning we really have no idea. But we're aiming for a minimum of a year, Im sure I wont be ready to leave even then! Paris has been great so far, there are endless discoveries..
goodness sake, u were in the marais and you missed it!! POZZETTO. The living Italian stallino of GELATO. A poetry of fresh fruits and smooth creamy flavours such as the Ganduja, hazelnut-chocolat which tips u over.
Give it another try. I think it sits close to your amorino, in the wonderful chic part of the marais (rue de Sicile?)
