Everything old is new again..

Well there are two new things in my life all of a sudden. A new cookbook, and a new logo for my blog. The cookbook is the first one that I have bought in over a year, since we have been moving around so much. And it's safe to say that it is probably the largest and heaviest one that I now own. And strangely, it's probably the one from which I will cook the least amount of recipes. Not because they don't look delicious, but because many of them are a bit beyond my reach. Both in technique and in ingredients. I'll have to work at it slowly. But it is very pretty to look at, and I could flip through it's pages until the wee hours of the morning. Perhaps one day soon I will conquer one of its recipes and tell you about it.

Fantastic logo - so chic! I've looked at the French Laundry cookbook in the bookstore, it's quite a monster! I don't think I could justify spending so much on a book that I probably wouldn't use either. However, the biggest scandal in my opinion is the new El Bulli book. Apparently it retails for $350...

Hi Melissa, thanks for the compliments on the logo! Im shocked at the mention of $350 for a cookbook. Although I have no idea how much this one cost. I assumed it was within reason! I asked my boyfriend to pick it up for me when he was in England. He must have thought I wanted it badly, but he never said anything about the price! I guess i'll have to cook out of it now.. :)

It IS a gorgeous book, I've perused it many times in the bookstore! However as we're moving in the next few months, I've been banned from adding any more heavy books to my collection! I look forward to hearing about your forays into his cuisine!

Hi Tara! I'll certainly do my best. I think i will be skipping all the foie gras recipes that's for sure. But he does some good work with cheese, and you know how I'm on that cheese kick lately! :)

Thanks Clare! The cookbook is really beautiful, but some of it is a bit complicated. Its all the recipes from his restaurant, even he admits at the beginning of the book that alot of these recipes people wont cook! But its a great read, and Im sure I will try the ones that I can :)

I've contemplated the French Laundry Cookbook too, but have not yet made that leap as I had heard mixed reviews about it. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it and itthat it is the sort of book you can really readI love a "readable" cookbook. I may investigate that further. Thanks!

Hi Lynn, well I hope to do one of the "easy" recipes this weekend and I will post it. So you can check it out and let me know what you think. :)

I was given this book four years ago and like you - i think it is a bit beyond me. There is one recipe I make from it again and again, though, Sally Schmitt's Cranberry & Apple Kuchen.
I was also very lucky when a friend cooked me Roasted Rib Steak with Golden Chanterelles, Pommes Anna and Bordelaise Sauce.
Oh, and I almost forgot, I did make one other thing which was fantastic and not too difficult: French Laundry Inspired - Ahi Tuna Cornets .
Enjoy - have fun with it.
I am sure you already know how to make kuchen though!

Hi Sam, thanks for the insight! I will definitely check out those recipes. It will be a challenge to see if I can get through even a handful of the recipes in the book. Although I truly don't know how to make kuchen. I'm just a Canadian girl who rarely bakes at all! I could use a good german baking tutor while I'm here though, that would be fantastic :)

btw the kuchen is SO SO easy. It is not reallly a french laundry recipe - it is in the back of the book with a story about the people (the Schmitts) from whom Keller bought the building.
so start with that one - you wont even need a baking tutor. I never bother to make the sauce. I just serve it warm from the oven sometimes with whipped cream.

Hi Sam, I checked out the recipe, it does look much easier than I would have expected. I will definitely have to give it a try, and perhaps I'll wow the germans at the same time :)

If you never make anything in this cookbook, the story he tells about preparing a rabbit is beautifully written, and a good lesson to remember.
